Greyhounds as Pets
Our team volunteered for a charity called Greyhounds as Pets (GAP). The purpose of the charity is to re-home racing greyhounds when they are not wanted as racers anymore. Unfortunately it is a fairly common practice that when the dogs can no longer race they are simply euthanised. The racing life of a greyhound is quite short – most are finished when they are about 3 years old, so they certainly have a lot of life left in them! GAP works with the animals to socialise them as pets and then find good homes for them.
We helped Lynda and Clare from GAP run a hotdog stand in central Auckland as well as doing the rounds with the charity bucket. We had two lovely mascots with us (Ivan and Pauley) who showed what lovely placid and friendly dogs greyhounds are.
In total we raised $723 ($20 of which was from the Mayor of Auckland!)!! This was much more than was expected and GAP were absolutely rapped!
