024Sorting rubbish and loading Jumbo Bin with garden waste in community garden
Over the last year we have cleared an overgrown vacant lot to establish a community garden and in doing so have amassed a large pile of waste. This pile is mostly weeds but also contains some chicken wire, fence posts and old bits and pieces tangled amongst the plants, nothing toxic! There is approximately 10 -12 cu m of rubbish so we will hire a jumbo bin and would like 10 volunteers to help fill this. The bin will be one for garden waste only so other materials will need to be sorted to a separate pile.
How this project will benefit the community
the garden is open to the community and is currently being gardened by locals who are planting vegetables and food bearing plants and clearing the site. It is well used and will provide organic produce to locals. the garden also takes waste from local cafes to turn into compost so reduces local waste output. At the back of the site native tree wetas and skinks are breeding so in this fenced off area we have planted natives and are establishing a native wildlife area. This will support local biodiversity.

WOW the once nasty lot has been transformed - can't wait to have a swing hanging from the tree and the local children hanging out there while their parents garden ...

This project sounds like a fantastic idea and one that the whole community can get behind. Gardens are great places for kids to explore and learn. My fondest memories of living in Wilton st as a kid were the fruit trees we had in our back yard - plum, fig, banana, grapes, locquat, pawpaw...great to climb in and eat - though lead to more than a few sore tummies when the fruit wasn't ripe enough! I think the previous owners must have been market gardeners in a former life, so it's great that you are now creating an environment like this that everyone can share.

Spring is here and having some extra help from the BNZ staff will really help our community garden make some significant progress. We are interested in "urban food production" .Teaching/reminding people they can grow their own food in central Auckland.

I wish to support the Wilton Street Community Garden in Grey Lynn. It's an exemplary space that encompasses community spirit and environmental responsibility. Spaces like this encourage people to use their food waste as a resource for growing their own food.

Great to see some green space being created in an area used for parking cars. Could all the garden waste be left on site and used to run a composting workshop!

Let's have public gardens throughout the whole city! This will be among the first wave of renewed community engagement with gardening ... into the future

Having this pile GONE will be a great asset! Much, much nicer view for people living in the street… and it will free up one of the sunniest spots in the garden for more vegetables and fruit trees!! …One of the many wonderful things about community gardening is that worker bees get to share the bounty... Not that that’s a bribe BNZ… %}

The garden already has many spin offs for the local community, inspiring others, generating a positive community spirit, transforming a 'waste' space and giving pleasure to passers by and gardeners alike. It can only get better and removing the rubbish with BNZ help will be a big step forward.

It's amazing seeing the transformation that has already taken place on this once derelict lot thanks to lots of sweat and tears from Mandy, Jacqui and others. A bit of a monetary boost would really make all the difference!

Alot of hard work has already happened - it's looking great - but more hands make light work & it would be great if BNZ could help out a deserving project like this

The Wilton Street Community Garden is a superb 21st Century sustainability project. Local people taking the initiative, turning vision into action. Edible garden, biodiversity, amenity, community and much more... the perfect candidate for our local BNZ team to help out with!

What a great effort. The team here has put their heart and soul into the project. I have seen the garden and know how much the gardeners would appreciate the assistance from the BNZ people involved to assist in clearing waste material.

As I live just a few doors down myself in Wilton Street I find this Garden has not only got rid of a disused piece of land that was an eye saw, but has created a harmony in the street and community as a whole. Plus there is the small added bonus of being able to grow its own vegetables and fruits.

I really support this project as it is a wasted, and formerly toxic, piece of ground in the heart of community minded West Lynn (Grey Lynn). The group who have been clearing it up give generously of their time and it is already looking heaps better. The Farmers market is just over the road and it would be fantastic to have a community garden next door. Please support them.
